The Full Story

Michael Cornachione began serving communities in rural Tanzania in 2010 through Engineers without borders when he was a professor of civil engineering at Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT). Projects during this era included assessment of available water sources, courses on water treatment methods and water education workshops for the local primary schools.

Mike found himself returning year after year, bringing new college students from OIT to assist in the program and developing a strong relationship with the Hanga community in southwest Tanzania. This program continued for about 7 years until Mike retired from teaching in 2017.

In his retirement, Mike found himself with a desire to continue where he left off and return to Tanzania to help continue the education programs he started and see if there was a way to help develop better infrastructure for delivering clean water to the community. Though the pandemic initially delayed the project, Jeremy Goldman and Mike's son Adam Cornachione founded Volunteer 360 as an official non-profit in 2023.

Since becoming a non-profit, the Volunteer 360 team led by Mike has returned to the Hanga region of Tanzania once every summer to assess and develop projects. In the last two visits, they have met with community members and have been able to install two deep water wells in the region, serving primarily public school children, along with developing curriculum for and supplying internet to a local trade school's tech program.

Volunteer 360 is currently planning another trip in summer of 2026 to continue to expand their relationships to more communities and continue to develop education and sustainable water infrastructure to rural Africa.
