The Full Story

Michael and Harriet Cornachione, Professors of Civil Engineering at Oregon Institute of Technology, started an Engineers Without Borders Student Chapter during the 2009-2010 academic year. During that time the EWB Club developed contacts with members of Hanga, a small community in southern Tanzania. The initial projects focused on the assessment of water resources and the installation of hand pumped water wells.

After retirement in 2012, Mike and Harriet continued working with the Hanga community. Their primary focus during this time was teaching water resource management and water quality classes. They developed a two week seminar type course and presented the class to students at the Hanga Vocational Training Center. Over the next ten years they visited Hanga area five times, presenting the class and providing professional expertise on local water related issues.

In 2022, in discussions with Jeremy Goldman and Mike and Harriet's son Adam, the idea of establishing a non profit organization to assist in funding water resource, treatment, and education projects led to the development of the Volunteer360 organization. Though delayed by the ongoing pandemic, V360 became a reality and an official 501c3 non-profit organization in 2023.

Since becoming a non-profit, the Volunteer 360 team, led by Mike, returned to Hanga in 2024 and 2025 to assess and develop water projects. In the last two visits, they have met with community members and have been able to fund and install two deep water wells in the region, serving primarily public school children. Additional projects include developing IT curriculum and supplying a reliable internet connection to the Vocational Training Center.

V360 Timeline

2007

2009

Professors, Mike and Harriet Cornachione, establish an Engineers Without Borders student chapter at Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT). Through a local contact, students establish a relationship with the Hanga Abbey of St.Maurus, a Benedictine Monastery, in southern Tanzania.

The club returns to Hanga and installs three wells with hand pumps in

small rural communities near Hanga.

2012 - 2022

After retiring from OIT, Mike and Harriet continue their work with the
Hanga community. Their primary focus was the development and
teaching of a short course on water resources and water quality. The
class was presented to students at the Hanga Vocational Training Center.

2023

With the support of Jeremy Goldman and Mike and Harriet’s son, Adam

Cornachione, the framework for Volunteer 360 was initiated.

2024

Volunteer 360 was officially established. The first funded project was a
water well project to provide clean drinking water for three local schools. The project included drilling a deep 300 meter well, installation of a solar powered pump, construction of water tanks for storage, and placement of water lines to the schools.

2025

Volunteer 360 initiates a second deep water well project for a newly
constructed secondary school in the nearby village of Bombambili. V360 also assisted the Hanga Vocational Training Center in establishing a functional, reliable internet connection for all students.

2026

Volunteer 360 will continue to develop water well projects for communities in southern Tanzania. V360 will also increase efforts in developing internet access and education for schools and local communities.

2008

The OIT Student Chapter, with Mike and Harriet, visit Hanga, Tanzania on an assessment trip. The team identified a critical need for clean water. During their stay in Hanga, the Abbey provided critical support for the team including food and housing, transportation, and communication.
